De Wilde has always been fascinated with patterns. It doesn’t really matter what kind of patterns; He played with networks, leaves and leaf venation, branches, lightning, flocking, tracing outlines, rock sediments, landscapes, slime mold, lichens, reaction-diffusion, cellular automaton, fractals, and a few other things. The artist is fascinate how complex and intricate results you can get from a set of simple rules, just like in nature and some biological patterns. To achieve this De Wilde ‘plays’ with algorithms, more specifically differential algorithms. While inspired by natural systems De Wilde’s sculptures try to transcend mere mathematical modelling to something captivating and unique, yet propose a new way of thinking about how we can design or “grow” our environment.
